Chopped: Kendra’s Edition – Week One 🍴 - Turn Basic Canned Tomato Sauce into Homemade BBQ Sauce

Y’all came through with some awesome pantry picks in the poll, and I was excited to see that I already had ALL the winning ingredients in my pantry (rice, dry beans, canned chicken, and canned tomato sauce).

This week I’ll be making a recipe that uses all of them together, but first, I wanted to kick things off with something simple using just the tomato sauce – Homemade BBQ Sauce!

This one’s an extremely versatile recipe. Once you make it a few times, you won’t even need a recipe - you’ll just start throwing things in and creating all kinds of tasty variations.

For my twist, I added in some of Kendra’s Kreations Blue Moon Mustard and it gave it the perfect zing!

Stay tuned - recipes using the full mystery basket are coming soon, and I’ll be posting the Week Two poll next Wednesday in the Friends of Kendra's Kreations FB group. Can’t wait to see what ingredients y’all throw at me next! Recipe below!

Homemade BBQ Sauce

Here’s a super simple way to whip up a classic barbecue sauce with stuff you probably already have in the pantry or fridge. Start with a 15-ounce can of tomato sauce and then add in some sweet, tangy, and smoky flavors to make it your own.

Ingredients:

  • 1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce

  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar

  • 1/3 cup sweetener of choice (sugar, agave, honey… whatever you’ve got)

  • 1/4 cup molasses

  • 2 tbsp ketchup or tomato paste

  • 1 tbsp liquid aminos or Worcestershire sauce

  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

  • 1 tsp paprika, or smoked paprika

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • 3 heaping tsp grainy mustard (optional but so good)

  • 1/2 tsp onion powder OR 1 tsp dried onion flakes

  • Splash of juice, beer, broth, or water if it gets too thick

Pro tip: Toss in any random condiments hiding in your fridge - jams, jellies, hot sauce, mustard, you name it. That’s how you get fun, one-of-a-kind flavors. If it gets too thick add a little liquid (beer, broth, juice, water).

Instructions: 1. Combine everything in a medium saucepan.

2. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, then turn it down and let it cook uncovered for 15–20 minutes, stirring now and then until it thickens up.

3. Taste and adjust however you like.

4. Let it cool, then store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week. It’ll thicken even more as it chills.
